Character Name: Scorpius
Series: Farscape
Age: Undetermined, but clearly well into adulthood given his rank in a military organization.
From When?: From the end of Season 2, Episode 21, after the depository blows up around him.

Inmate/Warden: Inmate - Scorpius thinks nothing of hurting or killing people to attain what he wants. He is dismissive, callous, cold, and ruthless and will sacrifice any number of people if it meant serving his own ends. He's driven to the point of near psychopathy and has tortured countless others using his Aurora chair. As a captain of the Peacekeepers, he often subscribes to the brutality of their regime and is all around an unforgiving maniac with an outwardly calm demeanor. Changing him into someone less brutal and sadistic would mean saving lives and ways of life.

Abilities/Powers: Scorpius is extraordinarily strong - much stronger than a human or Sebacean. Upon his arrival to the Barge he should have his strength reduced to that of a human.

He also has the odd ability to tell when someone is lying. He can see a bio energy signature coming off of each person he encounters; this signature changes when the person is purposely being deceitful.

Not necessarily a power but necessary to his survival is the suit he wears that protects him from the unfortunate dichotomy of his existence. The Scarran race is a heat-generating species, whereas the Sebaceans are extremely susceptible to heat and in extreme cases can suffer what's known as the Living Death. Thus, as the only living Scarran-Sebacean halfbreed, Scorpius produces large amounts of heat and then suffers through it. He copes with this by employing a staff whose primary purpose is to replace the cooling rods that must be inserted into his brain for him to continue to function. When replacing the rods, Scorpius is exceptionally vulnerable and can't manage the motor functions to do it himself - therefore, he has to trust others to do it for him, in a position that leaves him weak and frightened.

Personality:

Above all things, Scorpius is determined. Long ago he decided he wanted to eliminate the Scarran race and everything he's done since that time has been in an effort to reach that goal. He is extraordinarily patient with regards to his long-term goals, often waiting years for his objectives to be complete. However, when circumstances arise that are unexpected or out of his control, he can start to lose patience very quickly, and his voice will change from an even, light tone to a deeper snarl. At this point, he can turn violent and it's best to stay well out of his way when this happens. This loss of patience is also attributed to when it comes close to the time when his cooling rods need to be replaced: when his head starts to overheat, Scorpius' voice drops and he becomes irrationally angry and frantic.

Part of his ruthlessness and determination can be owed to his origin and upbringing. Scorpius is the only halfbreed of his kind (A Sebacean/Scarran mix) and owing to Sebacean Peacekeeper blood purity laws, would ordinarily not have been allowed to join the PK ranks. However, his devotion to ridding the galaxy of the Sebaceans' mortal enemies convinced them to let Scorpius be the exception. As the lone halfbreed captain amidst full-blooded Sebacean warriors, Scorpius feels compelled to never show weakness to his enemies, lest it be taken advantage of. That isn't to say he's loyal strictly to the Sebacean race: he sees them as a means to an end and little else, both a part and not a part of the Peacekeeper army. Unlike most of those he allies with, Scorpius is not interested in power or taking over the galaxy; he's interested in revenge.

Scorpius likes to plan ahead and has a bit of a reputation as a strategist. He's very, very smart and good at understanding his enemies by getting inside their heads (sometimes literally, in the case of Crichton!). He comes up with contingency ideas in case his first moves fail, which they rarely do: Scorpius plays to win, and takes no prisoners in the games he chooses to play. He doesn't blink at committing genocide on a whim if he thinks it will get him what he wants, and rarely suffers failure well. Additionally, he has a bad habit of turning on those he senses are not absolutely loyal to him and might turn on him for the right price: people who have come to him as traitors hoping to see mercy have often been shown the door and then a swift and unfortunate end.

That isn't to say he's a conventional, mustache-twirling take-over-the-galaxy sort of guy. The plans he makes are succinct and direct and mainly revolve in revenge against the Scarrans for the horrors they inflicted upon him and his biological mother. He's not usually content to leave important tasks in the hands of his underlings and instead is a very hands-on person, even with tasks that would ordinarily be below those of his rank. He isn't a violence-for-violence's sake sort of person unless he has a personal vendetta against them, and while he actively embraces using force for a purpose, he usually doesn't hurt others unless there's something to be gained from it.

The key word being "usually."

Scorpius' relationship with Crichton is...complicated. He rarely rises to Crichton's bait and seems to take most of the man's eccentricities and name-calling in stride. Crichton to him is a curious, unique being, but his chief fascination with him starts and ends with the wormhole information planted inside Crichton's mind by a race called the Ancients. More than once, Scorpius has had the means to either cripple or kill Crichton without endangering his own goals and instead chose to let the man live. His frustration at Crichton's elusiveness is less a reflection of anger directed at Crichton and more irritation at himself for his own failings: Scorpius is used to working smart and hard and having his efforts rewarded. That Crichton has continuously proven to be a wrench in his plans leaves him perplexed more often than upset. In the times when he gains an upper hand in the struggle to recapture the man, Scorpius is not preoccupied with ideas of making John suffer for the immense amount of time and planning wasted on bringing him back in. Instead, Scorpius remains fixated on his goals and what he needs out of John in order to continue.

Scorpius, in his own way, worries about Crichton...or at least, worries about the parts of his head that he needs. He sees the man as a sort of golden ticket towards unlocking what he needs to achieve his life's goals, and is unnervingly protective of the man. Crichton is a man with many enemies, and Scorpius has battled them all off in order to protect his prize from reaching hands.

With other enemies, Scorpius is unfailingly polite...up to a point. He won't storm in, guns blazing, if he thinks he won't win. Ultimately he will never let his ego or his mania get in the way of achieving his objective, and is very good at keeping his temper in check. He respects those who try to kill him, but doesn't let this stop him from eliminating them as threats. He doesn't waste time in torture - or so he claims - and will speak to his enemies as equals, explaining things they might not understand or have misinterpreted. But it isn't quite gloating: Scorpius is serious and firm and feels as though he owes it to his enemies to let them know why he's sentenced them to their respective fates. While he may permit his enemies to ask questions, he doesn't usually tolerate questioning from his underlings and finds it disrespectful.

Much of Scorpius' personality is dictated by a desire to discover who he is and what his purpose ought to be. Truly a self-made man, Scorpius long ago came to the realization that he was born of violence and trauma inflicted by the Scarrans, and thus feels it is his obligation and duty to stop them at every turn for the horrors they inflicted on him and others. He's driven to the point of obsession at ending their hostile rule, and will ally himself with other enemies in order to achieve this ultimate life goal. Because of this, he feels that wormhole technology is the most important lynchpin in the coming battle, and will do what is necessary in order to obtain it. Unfortunately, this often means the sacrifice of many on his side.

Barge Reactions: Upon arriving on the Barge, Scorpius will quickly realize he's outnumbered and amidst hostiles, and will not proceed with any plans until he is firmly established and back in semi-control again. Outwardly he will be patient and calm but inwardly he will be seething that his plans have once again been interrupted. He'll begin making contacts to bring Crichton to him and will immediately begin harassing the man at every conceivable opportunity, but in a way that will not make him the ire of the rest of the Barge. Drawing negative attention to himself while weaponless is not the best of ideas.

As an alien lifeform who's been traveling the outer territories for some time, Scorpius is no stranger to the strange and bizarre; he'll take floods, breaches, people, and other such oddities as part of the casualty of following Crichton wherever he goes. His biggest concern is when he needs to replace his cooling rods, which is a task he cannot perform himself: in cases such as these, he may resort to begging for help in order to keep himself alive.

Path to Redemption:

Ultimately, Scorpius is committing mass genocide against one race to save the galaxy from an even larger genocide. He fears and worries about a universe being overrun by the Scarran army and much of his work has been devoted to ending their control. Most of his actions are dictated by "the ends justify the means" mentality, and he himself doesn't think of himself as a villain; more like a person who needs to do what is necessary in order to sustain life. Having him realize that there are other, more compromising ways to achieve what he wants without sacrificing parts of his soul is key to convincing him to be gentler and more considerate. Very little will sway him from his desire to kill the Scarrans, but his best hope for redemption is to urge him to relax his means.

Scorpius is capable of love, which sometimes for him can be a more powerful motivator than revenge. In times where his enemies - proven, strong warriors he respected - were incapacitated and unable to harm him at all, Scorpius generally extended a small bit of mercy and allowed them to live. This slight streak of compassion is key to harnessing his redemption: Scorpius despises being thought of as Scarran, and one of a Scarran's defining traits is an inability to show and a hatred of weakness. Compassion, something a Scarran would despise, is something Scorpius does actually have and could be compelled to show more, for good reason.

It's important to note that Scorpius will often listen to any argument from another person's point of view that he happens to disagree with: although he will not always follow given advice and primarily looks inward for the right path to choose, the key thing to note is that he is entirely capable of entertaining the notion that he might be wrong. He has the capacity to grow and change his methods and experiment a little with various results, and has the mind of a scientist where it counts - letting him play around with other suggested methods of enforcement would also open him up to new possibility.

Also of note is the fact that John Crichton is currently housed on the Barge as well, and may be instrumental in Scorpius' own redemption, as much of Scorpius' crimes have been inflicted upon John at one time or another. Scorpius is best reasoned with when he's happy, and nothing makes him happier than having John in his possession.

The good thing is that no matter who his warden is, Scorpius will automatically afford them some portion of respect, due to their position and their hold over him. This carries over from his military training, and his recognition that he needs a warden to get him off the Barge.

History:

Sample Journal Entry: Sample entry on the Voice Test Meme.

Sample RP: Scorpius knows he's in deep, serious trouble.

Being dead and a prisoner were setbacks, yes, but they were minor ones - he could find ways of working around them and eventually learn how to break free and win back his life. They were inconveniences, but they weren't his immediate concern.

No - his most immediate concern was that he had arrived on the Barge without a conceivable way of stabilizing his cooling suit.

Already he could feel the heat baking through the leather as his own brain worked to betray him. How long would he have before he succumbed to heat delirium and the eventual Living Death? A few arns at most; already he could feel sweat beading on his forehead. His own death hadn't scared him - that had been over with in about ten seconds, too short a time to realize what was happening - but a slow, agonizing demise to be repeated over and over again? That caused an unsettling chill in Scorpius.

He would have to find replacements, and soon. More worrying than that, he'd have to find someone he could trust to be discrete and careful. Essentially he'd be putting his life in the hands of another: something Scorpius was never particularly thrilled about and dreaded to do so now, on a ship full of strange aliens. At least most had never heard of Peacekeepers - the reputation was less than stellar in the Uncharted Territories and he wouldn't have to deal with the stigma it carried here.

And that left Crichton and Sun. Scorpius knew they were here, had seen them chatting to each other over the network communicators. It was difficult to decide whether he wanted to forego the cooling suit and chase after John, or leave him for the moment in order to attain self-sufficiency. Eventually, the heat delirium made his decision for him as he staggered through the Barge hallways on the way to the infirmary, one hand grasping his head in pain. He'd rather face Crichton for the first time since his death without grimacing in agony, and for that he'd need to find a doctor.

Soon.
